Don Allen Wildwood Sports Day
For The Physically Challenged
Wildwood AARP Chapter 2421's motto is "To Serve, Not to Be Served." It is this attitude that enables Wildwood Sports Day to have all the volunteers needed to help the physically challenged have a wonderful day.
Because of all the dedicated work from many volunteers, the Coordinator of Wildwood Sports Day was privileged to receive the local Jefferson Award. This included a trip to the Senate Building in Washington, D. C. for the presentation service, which is in recognition of outstanding community service. It is really the Don Allen Wildwood Sports Day for the Physically Challenged that received the honor.
In response to this honor the President of the United States sent us congratulations. His picture is top right.
Ted Poe, House of Representatives, 2nd District of Texas, also sent congratulations. His letter is to the right.
Bob Toye, AARP National Office and State Liaison for Chapter and Community Networks; Gus Cardenas, AARP Texas State President; Bob Jackson, AARP Texas State Director; Molly Wooodrum, AARP Texas State Volunteer Leader for Chapter Operations; Lee Bigelow, AARP Texas District Chapter Liaison, and several other state officials presented a Community Betterment Award 2005 plaque to Wildwood Chapter 2421 at a special luncheon on April 10, 2006. It was presented in partnership with the National Organization on Disability in recognition for outstanding project achievement, its annual sponsorship of the Don Allen Wildwood Sports Day for the Physically Challenged. "It's Ability, Not Disability, that Counts!" exclaimed Bob Toye as he also presented Wildwood Chapter 2421 a check for $1,000 to be used in the Don Allen Wildwood Sports Day for the Physically Challenged held on the third Saturday in May each year. Sibyl Allen, Don Allen's widow, has been and continues to be the inspiration and encouragement behind this event.
There are hundreds of volunteers from the community and beyond who give their time to make this Day in the Sun an enjoyable time for the physically challenged.
The next event is Saturday, May 17, 2008.
